Why Metro to Outer Nordhavn?
In March 2020, the metro opened to Nordhavn and Orientkaj, providing new, fast connections between Nordhavn and other parts of the city. Nordhavn is the largest current urban development area in Copenhagen, and once Nordhavn is fully developed, it is expected to house 35.000 people and employ 28.000 people. Therefore, the M4 extension to Outer Nordhavn is intended to ensure efficient public transport to a rapidly developing district.
A More Climate Friendly Metro
With the decision to extend the M4 to Outer Nordhavn, you get more metro. But you also get a metro with a lower climate impact.
In the work with the M4 to Outer Nordhavn, we have placed a very strong emphasis on designing a metro system where we reduce the CO2 footprint. For the entire project, the goal is to reduce the climate impact by 50% compared to the existing line in Nordhavn. To achieve this goal, we set an intermediate target that the first 30% reduction should be achieved solely by optimizing the design during the assessment phase. In the next phase, the goal is to achieve additional CO2 reductions.
More Metro Also Contributes to Increased Use of Public Transport
Additionally, more metro contributes to more people using public transport. This is one of the goals in Copenhagen Municipality's 2025 Climate Plan, which also aims to make Copenhagen the world's first CO2-neutral capital city.
Routing
The chosen route is an extension of the M4 from Orientkaj Station to two new stations: near Levantkaj and near Nordhavn C. Both stations are elevated.
With this routing, passengers at the two new stations will have direct access to the inner-city areas and transit hubs, with a travel time of about 7 minutes from the terminal station near Nordhavn C to Østerport – and about 14 minutes to Copenhagen Central Station. With a transfer at Kongens Nytorv, you can reach the airport in approximately 27 minutes.
The metro line ensures that about 80% of the area in Outer Nordhavn is no more than 600 meters from the nearest metro station.
The Next Steps in the Process
In September 2023, politicians in Copenhagen decided that The Copenhagen Metro should continue working on a route with two stations in Outer Nordhavn.
The next step is now to conduct an environmental impact assessment of the chosen route, and based on this, a final political decision can be made regarding the establishment of the metro line.
Afterwards, the project can be put out to tender, and construction of the metro can begin. The goal is to be able to welcome passengers on the M4 to Outer Nordhavn in 2030.
